Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined in on the chase for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans. Evans had a pretty interesting start to the New Year when he was subjected to the interest of clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal.
The former Red Devil defender was shown great interest by both City and Arsenal but unfortunately for Evans, neither approach transferred to a confirmed move. The centre-back has been in fine form since the start of the season and it was believed that both Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola were looking at Evans as a possible option to bolster their backlines.
While Guardiola brought in French defender Aymeric Laporte, Wenger could not come on agreeable terms with West Brom to take away Evans. It was believed Alan Pardew and his men were holding off on a much higher amount than what was offered to them by Wenger.
Pardew initially had never intended to sell Evans but given the situation at the club, he, at one point in time, resigned to the fact that he might lose Evans. The player, however, stayed and all was thought to be okay. This was only until recently when reports came out linking Evans with a move to North London once again, this time to Arsenal’s fierce rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs are well-stocked in defence with players like Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier marshalling the backline. It would seem that for Spurs to get in another defender would be pointless. However, if we were to delve a little deeper into the Spurs side of the story, we would find several cracks in the side.
Alderweireld’s situation at the club is far from settled. He has a complicated contract which will expire very recently and with the player demanding a wage that the club will never agree to, Spurs might be forced to part ways Alderweireld sooner rather than later by selling him for minimum profits.
As for Eric Dier, he is a makeshift centre-back who prefers to play as a holding midfielder. Vertonghen is not getting any younger and this would mean that adding another centre-back would not be the worst idea. Moreover, West Brom, given their current run, are set for the drop.
This would mean that the Baggies will be in no position to hold on to Jonny Evans and the player will look to leave the club on the cheap thereby making him a decent addition to the Spurs backline for next season’s Premier League campaign.
