Real Madrid are set to reignite their interest in AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci next summer. According to recent reports, the Galacticos are plotting a move for the Italian centre-back when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.
After spending seven years at Juventus, the 30-year-old Italy international signed for AC Milan last summer as part of a deal worth in the region of £35m. He was also being tracked by Premier League clubs which include Chelsea and Manchester City. However, the defender was hesitant to make a move out of Italy and has since been made the captain of the current AC Milan team.
Although it seems highly unlikely that AC Milan chiefs will let him depart the club just one year after he made a move to the San Siro, there is still a chance that they could be forced to sell their prized asset in order to balance their books and comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.
Bonucci will also not feature in next year’s FIFA World Cup 2018 after Italy failed to qualify for the mega event. This means that Los Blancos can get the best out of him next season if they are successful in luring him to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this summer.
The Galacticos are currently occupying 4th place in the La Liga standings, a staggering 15 points behind their rivals and league leaders Barcelona. Zinedine Zidane’s side are in dire need of reinforcements in the summer as they look to bridge the gap between themselves and Barca in the coming years.
The addition of Bonucci will undoubtedly bolster Zinedine Zidane’s defensive options going into the new campaign as they look to maintain their dominance in Europe while also mounting a realistic challenge for the La Liga title next season. The Italian defender has featured in 40 matches for AC Milan this season, scoring one goal while creating one assist in all competitions.
He has a wealth of experience in the Serie A and could turn out to be a shrewd signing for the Galacticos. At 30, he still has a few years left in him to play at the top level which Madrid could look to utilise in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Bonucci and whether he ends up making a move to the Spanish capital in search of fresh adventures next summer.
