Latest reports in the media are confirming that Scottish club Rangers is monitoring the progress of Australian U-23 star Brandon O’Neill. The Light Blues have been tracking the development of O’Neill for quite some time now and it is believed they are interested in bringing him in.
O’Neill currently plays for Australian side Sydney FC but his contract is set to expire this December. It is believed that Rangers could look to exploit the contract situation and bring in the U-23 star for a cut-price deal.
However, Rangers apparently is only interested in bare minimum and have not made him their top target, meaning that they are unlikely to go in heavy for him. Moreover, O’Neill is believed to be happy in his current club and could be set to stay there.
He said: “It’s great for me here. I love flying into tackles and getting stuck in. We are all at a good place right now and everyone at the club is happy.”
This would mean that for Rangers to get their man, they would have to do some serious convincing and carve out a delicious amount of Sydney FC.
The ex-Perth Glory player has been a star for his new team and has helped them to the top of the table with Sydney FC sitting 11 points clear at the top. His form has drawn praise from everyone Down Under with pundits and fans rating O’Neill as one of the best midfielders in not just the Australian league but also in the Asian Champions League.
Glasgow Rangers find themselves in the second spot in the Scottish Premiership after twenty-nine match weeks. The Bluenoses have collected 58 points from their 29 games and are now six points behind the defending champions Celtic.
Rangers will have to play an unlikely catch up now and while a gap of six points is mathematically achievable, Rangers will know the obscure nature of the task. After the 0-0 draw with the league leaders Celtic in their last game of 2017, the climb is now even tougher with the gruelling second half of the season taxing the players even more.
Pedro Caixinha who had tried to bring about a revolution with his approach and player signings at the Ibrox failed with his approach and subsequently got fired. His successor Graeme Murty has done a decent job so far. Murty most importantly restored club legend forward Kenny Miller to the team as he continues to rearrange the team.
Another exciting addition in the middle of the team in the form of O’Neill might be exciting for Rangers but the Bluenoses have enough young talent to harness and should focus on getting the best out of their exciting squad first before buying more players.
