Manchester United are trying to re-open negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over the transfer of Eric Dier next summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils are set to reignite their interest in the English midfielder and are looking to secure his services ahead of the new campaign. It is believed that Jose Mourinho’s side have been keeping tabs on Dier for a long time. United were interested in him last summer when Mourinho was looking to bolster his midfield options but a move failed to materialise.
Now, the Manchester side are ready to go back in for the England international with the Special One on the lookout for more midfielders when the transfer window reopens in the summer. United midfielder Michael Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season which means that the club will need to plug that hole left by the veteran midfielder. Dier remains a priority target for the Red Devils but they need to convince Spurs to sanction a deal for their prized asset.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to let Dier leave North London and is adamant that the 24-year-old is not up for sale. However, United are preparing to test Spurs’ resolve over the versatile holding midfielder by putting in an official bid in the region of £55m to try and kickstart negotiations between the two clubs.
Manchester United are currently occupying the second place in the Premier League standings with a total tally of 62 points in 29 league fixtures. In any other season, Jose Mourinho’s side would be well in with a chance of winning the league but the trailblazing form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall off the pace in the hunt for the league title. The Citizens of Manchester are leading the Premier League by a healthy 16 point lead with the Red Devils desperately trying to catch up with their bitter rivals.
The addition of Dier will undoubtedly bolster Jose Mourinho’s midfield options and could go a long way in helping them bridge the gap between themselves and Manchester City in the coming years. He is highly versatile and can operate in a number of different positions. He can play as a holding midfielder, as a right-back or in central defence which makes him a perfect fit for the Red Devils.
Dier has made 40 appearances for Spurs this season and has provided two assists across all competitions. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the 24-year-old midfielder and whether United are able to convince Tottenham Hotspur to part ways with their prized asset.
