Manchester United’s failure in Europe, a couple by the dominance of their neighbours in the domestic league, has left the Red Devils unhappy this season, as Jose Mourinho grows desperate for some success at Old Trafford. While they have a decent squad at the club, they are still looking to improve on the first team and the manager is convinced that his side need a midfielder to add some mettle to their side next season.
They have been scouting some of the finest names in Europe and PSG’s Marco Verratti is at the top of their wishlist. The Italian midfielder is among the best in Europe at the moment and is an integral part of the squad at the French capital. And reports now claim that PSG are ready to offer him a new deal, pushing United into the market for another midfielder. So who can Jose now target?
Here are three alternatives for the PSG man Manchester United should start scouting for:
Mateo Kovacic (Real Madrid):
The Croatian midfielder has found game time hard to come by at Bernabeu this season and is currently unsettled at the Spanish capital. He is easily one of the best midfielders in the game at the moment and will walk into most top teams in Europe. He has already been linked with a move to England and Manchester United should certainly give him a shot. At just 23, he is a long-term prospect, tailor-made for the English game and will be a huge coup for the Red Devils.
Fabinho (AS Monaco):
A transfer target for Mourinho even before the start of the current season, Fabinho decided to stay back in Ligue 1 for another season but could be on the move this summer. He is a versatile player, just the kind Mourinho likes and his attributes along with his experience is exactly what United need at the moment. He is an established star, who can walk into the first team at Old Trafford and can add balance to this United side, struggling in the middle of the park.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio):
Already linked with a move to Old Trafford, the 23-year old Serbian midfielder has been in terrific form in Serie A this season and is already a wanted man in England. The likes of Liverpool have been scouting for him for more than a year now and though might cost around £50m, is a huge coup for anyone who manages to land him this summer. At his age, he is only going to get better and is probably the best solution to the midfield problems at Old Trafford.
