Manchester United are looking to secure the services of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama next summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils have shortlisted six players to be the solution to their midfield woes this summer which includes the Kenya international. It is believed that the Spurs defensive enforcer could be available for a fee in the region of £40m this summer.
Jose Mourinho’s side are on the lookout for a new midfielder and the addition of Wanyama could provide some much-needed steel alongside Nemanja Matic at the heart of the United midfield. Some sources have claimed that United will part ways with Marouane Fellaini on a free transfer at the end of the campaign, with Michael Carrick also hanging up his boots to become part of the Red Devils’ backroom staff.
There are increasing doubts over Ander Herrera’s long-term future at Old Trafford after his one-year contract extension was automatically activated, while Paul Pogba has been touted to make a shocking move away from Manchester following recent speculation of a bust-up with the Special One. Hence, it is likely that Mourinho will be eager to add at least two fresh faces in order to bulk up his midfield as he looks to compete with champions-elect Manchester City next term.
Manchester United are currently sitting in second place in the Premier League standings with a tally of 59 points in 28 league matches. In any other season, Jose Mourinho’s team would be well in contention of winning the league but the record-breaking form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall behind in the race for the league title. The Citizens of Manchester are leading the Premier League by a massive 13 points with the Red Devils desperately trying to play catch up with their ‘noisy neighbours’.
The addition of Wanyama will undoubtedly bolster Jose Mourinho’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign. He is highly versatile and can play as a holding midfielder or as a centre-back which makes him an ideal asset for the Red Devils. The Kenya international has just featured in 15 matches for Tottenham Hotspur across all competitions this season and has found the back of the net once so far.
At 26, he still has his peak years ahead of him which United could look to utilise in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Wanyama and whether Mourinho can lure him to ply his trade at Old Trafford.
