Manchester United have extended the contract of their English midfielder Ashley Young until the summer of 2019, after exercising options in his current deal with the club. According to a reliable report in the English media, the Red Devils have secured the 32-year-old’s services for another year with his current deal set to run out at the end of this season.
Jose Mourinho has wasted no time and has retained his services for another year following his return to form during the course of this season. Young has been sensational for United this term and has adapted to his new role of being deployed as a left-back in Mourinho’s starting eleven. His versatility has been an asset for the Red Devils in this campaign and hence, it is no wonder that the Old Trafford-based club has extended his current deal with the club for one more year.
The former Aston Villa and Watford winger has featured in 26 matches for United this season, finding the back of the net twice while also providing five assists in all competitions. He can also boast 31 international caps for the England national team and has seven international goals to his name.
Manchester United are currently sitting in second place in the Premier League table with a tally of 59 points in 28 league matches. In any other season, Jose Mourinho’s side would be well in contention of winning the league but the record-breaking form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall behind in the race for the league title. The Citizens of Manchester are leading the Premier League by a massive 13 points with the Red Devils desperately trying to play catch up with their ‘noisy neighbours’.
Retaining some of their better players could go a long way in helping them bridge the gap between themselves and Manchester City in the coming years. The addition of Young will definitely aid them in their quest to compete in four different competitions going into the new campaign.
Young signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2011 from Aston Villa and has gone on to make 189 appearances at Old Trafford, scoring 37 goals and creating 59 assists in all competitions during his seven-year stay with the club. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Young and whether his one-year extension turns out to be a success or a bust. It remains to be seen if he can help Manchester United by winning some silverware with them in the near future.
