Manchester City are interested in securing the services of German defender Jerome Boateng next summer. According to recent reports, the Citizens are prepared to battle it out with Manchester United when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season. The Bayern Munich centre-back departed City in the summer of 2011 to ply his trade in the Bundesliga but some sources are now claiming that he could be available this summer with both Manchester clubs ready to clash heads in pursuit of his signature.
The Citizens boss Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Boateng after working with the player during his time at the Allianz Arena. It is believed that the defender will undoubtedly bolster their defensive options ahead of the new campaign. However, City could also face stiff competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona this summer on the hunt for the German international’s signature.
Guardiola has won three Bundesliga titles with Boateng between 2014 and 2016 which could increase City’s chances of landing the player. The 29-year-old has featured in 24 matches for Bayern Munich this season, scoring two goals while providing four assists in all competitions.
The Blues of Manchester lie at the top of the Premier League table with a tally of 81 points in 30 games in the league. They are firmly in the driver’s seat as they look to bag a top-flight title in English football with a healthy 16 point lead over their crosstown rivals Manchester United. Pep Guardiola’s side are taking part in two different competitions and have already earned the League Cup last month. They have also progressed to the final 8 of the UEFA Champions League having secured a 5-2 aggregate win over FC Basel earlier in March. They will now clash heads versus Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool over two legs for a place in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier cup competition.
The Citizens’ dream of doing a treble this season is well and truly on which is mainly down to the majestic form of their players. City have the likes of Vincent Kompany, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi vying for a place in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven. The addition of Boateng will definitely strengthen their defensive options going into the new campaign and could help them maintain their dominance in both domestic and European football.
It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Boateng and whether he ends up making a switch to the Etihad Stadium in the near future.
