Napoli are interested in securing the services of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet next summer. According to recent reports, the Serie A side are set to battle it out with Borussia Dortmund in pursuit of the Belgian keeper. Some sources have recently revealed that the 29-year-old is bracing himself for a Merseyside exit this summer and he has changed his agent in an effort to force a move out of the club.
Mignolet has not made an appearance for the Reds since January and it is believed that he is growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of regular first-team opportunities under Jurgen Klopp this year. It is expected that the ex Sunderland keeper won’t be short on options if he decides to leave the Merseysiders in search of greener pastures, with both Dortmund and Napoli showing interest to make a swoop for him at the end of the season. It has also been suggested that Klopp intends to bring in a new keeper ahead of the new campaign with Loris Karius yet to establish himself as his long-term number one at Anfield.
The Belgian has played in 22 matches for the Reds this season and has conceded 30 goals while keeping 7 clean sheets across all competitions. He will undoubtedly bolster Napoli’s goalkeeping options if they are able to lure him to the Stadio San Paolo this summer.
The Reds of Merseyside are currently lying in the 3rd position in the Premier League table after securing a hard-fought 2-0 win at home versus the Magpies on Saturday. The Anfield-based side find themselves just above Spurs, who are in fourth place with a two-point gap differentiating the two clubs right now.
However, the Merseyside giants are still 18 points behind league leaders Manchester City with only a handful of matches remaining this term. The addition of a new goalkeeper will definitely strengthen the Reds defensively next season as they look to bridge the gap between themselves and the Manchester clubs going into the future. Hence, letting players like Mignolet leave might be the best option for all parties.
It is evident from Klopp’s recent team selection that the German clearly does not fancy Mignolet anymore. He has fallen down the pecking order in recent months and now, a switch to Naples could reignite his career while Liverpool can move on without him. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Belgian and whether he ends up leaving Anfield in the near future.
