Liverpool have set their sights on FC Koln left-back Jonas Hector ahead of the summer transfer window. According to recent reports, the Reds are set to battle it out with Juventus in pursuit of the German defender’s signature this summer. It is believed that the Bundesliga full-back will depart the club at the end of the current campaign with a move to Merseyside being touted as a possibility this summer.
Some sources have recently claimed that Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of the defender’s talents and is expected to ramp up their interest in his signature during the summer transfer period. However, they will face stiff competition from some top European clubs which include Juventus. Hector has revealed in the past about his desire to make a switch to a top European club at the end of the season and it is highly likely that he will get his wish this summer.
The German international has featured in 15 matches for FC Koln this season and has one assist to his name in all competitions. He is highly versatile and can play in a number of different positions across the pitch. Hector primarily operates as a left-back but can also be deployed in central midfield or in a more advanced role on the left flank which makes him a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.
The Reds are currently sitting in the 3rd position in the Premier League table after their emphatic 5-0 victory over Watford earlier this month. The Merseyside outfit are just above Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently standing in the fourth place in the league table with a two-point gap separating the two teams. However, the Reds are a staggering 18 points behind league leaders Manchester City going into the final stretch of the season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side has defensively leaked in some cheap goals during the course of this campaign. Liverpool have the likes of Andrew Robertson, Alberto Moreno and James Milner vying for the left-back place in Klopp’s starting eleven so the addition of Hector will definitely add more competition for places in the Reds squad. Hector has been one of the best left-backs in Bundesliga over the last few years which has helped him earn 36 international caps for the German national team so far. He also has three international goals to his name and is currently preparing for the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Russia later this year.
At 27, Hector has a wealth of experience at the top level and could turn out to be a shrewd addition if the Merseysiders are successful in acquiring his services. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Hector and whether he ends up making a switch to Anfield in the near future.
