With a decent chance to qualify for Europe for the second consecutive year, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who are still active in this year’s Champions League are certainly a team on the rise. But there are a number of areas in the squad the manager can improve upon this summer and this has seen the Reds linked with some of the finest stars in Europe recently.
While strengthening their defence will be a priority, Liverpool are also in the market for a midfielder or two this summer and a number of names are constantly doing the rounds and the latest name that is dividing opinions among fans is English international Jack Wilshere.
Currently, in the final few months of his Arsenal contract, Wilshere was once regarded as one of the best midfielders in the country but after a mesmerizing debut season at Emirates, he has failed to keep up the hype and fell down the pecking order at Arsenal. He spent the previous season on loan at Bournemouth and looked back in form and has been effective at times this season under Arsene Wenger.
He has a goal and two assists in 10 league appearances and lack of playing time has seen him reject a contract extension in North London. A number of clubs are interested in his services along with Liverpool. But is he the right man for the Reds?
With 163 PL appearances, 22 UCL appearances and 34 international appearances, the 26-year old is an established midfielder who has every attribute needed to be successful in the top flight in England. A fleet-footed and street smart footballer, Wilshere is pleasing to the eye when in form and is a nightmare for defenders.
He can dribble past them with ease and can also produce passes that can break even the best of backlines. His touch and technique make his dangerous in the final third while his willingness to add numbers to the midfield off the ball makes him even more effective.
His injury history along with his commitment are a couple of issues that need to be addressed but he has enough potential to be a star, when at his peak.
Liverpool lost Philippe Coutinho in January and could lose Emre Can at the end of the season. They are set to welcome Naby Keita and are in the market for a no.6 for their first team. However, a creative midfielder is also important to their plans and this is where Wilshere fits in.
At just 26, the Englishman is still one of the best England has and coming in at a free transfer is a risk worth taking. But do you think Liverpool should look elsewhere?
