Leeds United played hosts to the Skybet Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road on Wednesday night with three crucial points up for grabs. The Peacocks boss Paul Heckingbottom opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation and were hoping to cause an upset on the night. The visitors began the match on the front foot and pushed for an opening goal in the first quarter of the game. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side finally found the breakthrough courtesy of a powerful header by Romain Saiss in the 28th minute. Wolves doubled their lead just before half-time through Willy Boly’s goal and took a comfortable 2-0 advantage into the break.
The West Midlands outfit kept on their domination in the second half and scored the third goal to kill off the contest in the 74th minute via a brilliant finish from substitute Benik Afobe. The match ended 3-0 in favour of the Championship leaders, who go six points clear at the top of the table.
Let’s take a look at how each Leeds United player fared on the night.
GK: Bailey Peacock-Farrell – 7/10
He made some good saves early on to keep things level for his team. The Leeds keeper was unlucky to concede 3 goals on the night but made some crucial saves to keep his team in the contest until the 75th minute.
RB: Gaetano Berardi – 5/10
He had a hard time dealing with Barry Douglas and struggled to cope with the Wolves attackers.
CB: Pontus Jansson – 5/10
He failed to dominate and lead the Leeds defence and had a mediocre game at the heart of the Peacocks backline.
CB: Liam Cooper – 5/10
He fell victim to a knee injury and was substituted in the first half.
LB: Vurnon Anita – 4/10
He failed to cope with the threat of Ivan Cavaleiro and had a difficult time at left-back.
CM: Kalvin Phillips – 5/10
He hardly had an impact on the opposition half and struggled to create chances for his teammates going forward.
CM: Adam Forshaw – 7/10
He was by far Leeds’ best player on the pitch. He put in a tireless shift and passed the ball well at the centre of the park.
RM: Stuart Dallas – 5/10
He was at fault for conceding the first goal. He tried to work hard but was ineffective in the final third.
CAM: Samuel Saiz Alonso – 6/10
He tried his best to create some chances for his teammates but unfortunately, most of his passes missed its target.
LM: Hadi Sacko – 4/10
He failed to make an impact in the game and was largely anonymous during the contest.
ST: Pierre-Michel Lasogga – 5/10
He was left isolated up top for the home team with chances at a premium for the Peacocks. Lasogga would be hoping for better days at Elland Road.
Substitutes:
CB: Matthew Pennington – 6/10
He did well to plug the hole in the Leeds defence but still ended up conceding 2 goals after coming on.
LM: Pablo Hernandez – 6/10
The Spaniard put in some dangerous crosses from the flanks and was a constant threat after coming off the bench.
ST: Caleb Ekuban – 5/10
He came on for the final quarter of the game and was lively in the opposition half.
