When Garry Monk shocked Leeds United at the end of last season by resigning from his job, it brought into the picture a certain Thomas Christiansen. Christiansen guided Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus to the last 16 of the Europa League and to Cypriot first division title last season before taking over at Leeds.
When Christian walked into the club, the board was hoping to see the positive effect of having a foreign manager, in a manner somewhat similar to what David Wagner or Marco Silva has had at Huddersfield Town and Hull City last season.
Leeds got off to a flying start to their new season. Fast flowing football that was easy on the eye and a defence that since the opening game at Bolton had conceded three goals in eight games meant that Leeds could not have hoped for a better start. The Leeds machine, however, began to show signs of crack as the league progressed and they now stand 13th in the table after 15 defeats in 37 games. It led to the sacking of their manager but his departure did little to turn around the club’s fortune.
Doubts are clouding over the club and the atmosphere at Leeds right now is grave. Several post-mortem reports of the club’s defeats have speculated about various aspects that the club needs to get right. With their chances of making the top six and qualifying for playoffs all but gone, Leeds United will want to make a fresh assault next season. The clubs seem to be already working on finding and scouting players for the upcoming season with the latest man to be linked with a move to their club being Alex Gallar.
The 25-year-old playmaker has played for over 9 clubs in his career. He currently plies his football in Spain in the second tier division with Huesca. Primarily he is a central midfielder cut can also play as a winger on either flank. He will be an interesting addition to the Leeds side but there are several question marks over the necessity of the move. Leeds are well stocked in midfield at the moment and their primary concern is with their frontline rather than the midfield.
It is unlikely Leeds will have an unlimited budget in the window and hence they should try and get in a forward first instead of trying to bring in players like Gallar who have not really excelled anywhere in their career so far and need some more time to get themselves ready to play for a club like Leeds United.
