Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has recently revealed that he shares a great relationship with the club’s supporters. In an interview with the club’s official website, the Sweden international disclosed that he considers the Peacocks fans as his family and looks forward to each game at Elland Road due to the incredible atmosphere generated by the United supporters.
The 27-year-old centre-back initially signed for the Peacocks on a loan deal from Torino in the summer of 2016 and made a permanent switch to Elland Road just a year later for a fee in the region of £3.5m. Jansson has established himself as one of best defenders in the Skybet Championship and is also a fan-favourite at West Yorkshire. In a recent interview with the club’s official website, he was quoted to have said,
“My relationship with the fans has been great from day one.
“They support me and the rest of the team all over England in huge numbers – but there is nothing like playing at home.
“The noise you get when Elland Road is rocking is amazing and we have shared some great memories together which will live with me forever.”
The Swedish centre-back’s form has dipped this season and with the Peacocks unlikely to secure promotion at the end of this campaign, it is likely that the 27-year-old might get offers from other clubs when the summer transfer window opens in June. Some sources have recently suggested that the veteran defender will consider his options in the summer but for now, Leeds supporters will be hoping that their relationship with the player might convince him to stay beyond this season.
The Peacocks are currently in the 14th position in the Skybet Championship standings with a tally of 50 points in 38 league matches. Paul Heckingbottom’s side are in dire need of some positive results in the coming weeks along with a lot of luck to have any chance of clinching a playoff spot at the end of the season. The West Yorkshire outfit finds themselves a massive 12 points behind sixth-placed Middlesbrough, who occupy the final playoff position with just eight matches to go in this campaign.
Jansson has featured in 36 matches for the Peacocks this season, scoring 3 goals in all competitions. He has also earned 13 international caps for the Swedish national team during the course of his career. Leeds United can’t afford to lose a player of his talents as he still has a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Heckingbottom should do all he can to retain his services for the next few years as his side looks to secure a promotion back to the Premier League in the near future.
Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Jansson and whether he ends up making a switch out of Elland Road this summer.
