Another week of turmoil in the Arsenal ranks oversaw another period of heavy speculation over Arsene Wenger’s future with the club. Now reports suggest that Everton can be the Frenchman’s next destination if he does face the axe by the end of the current season.
Arsenal hit another low in their already tumultuous 2017/18 season by losing 2-1 to freshly promoted, Brighton And Hove Albion on the weekend. They stretched their losing streak to 4 games and registered their 8th loss of the year within a span of just over 2 months.
The North London club hit a host of unwanted milestones including the 4-game losing streak which they have not endured since October of 2002.
The furthered the record books going 11 Premier League games without a clean sheet and could possibly break it in the next game against an in-form Watford side. Their 13 points from 15 away games in the league was last witnessed in the 1989/90 season where they managed just 12.
Clearly, something is very wrong in the club’s operational structure and the root cause mostly stems from either the management or the players. The club has been through a rebuilding process for the last 13 years and they have nothing to show for it other than 2 FA Cups and a UEFA Champions League final appearance.
Everything that Wenger built during his time with the Gunners is slowly crumbling away to dust bites with each passing season without any major trophy. The Premier League title has eluded them for 14 seasons now (considering the current campaign) and going by the current climate, it will keep eluding them until and unless a massive change is dealt upon by the bosses at Emirates.
The manager was hesitant to address his involvements in the club’s affairs beyond this season. He was quoted, “I don’t want to talk about my future today. At the moment, my future is not my main worry. My worry is to get Arsenal winning football games. Then we’ll see where we go from there. I’ll try and give my best as long as I am here.”
The 68-year-old has a number of nemesis in the Premier League but his greatest and most decorated one is Alex Ferguson. Even though Wenger has crossed the threshold of the highest serving manager in top-flight English football, he is miles away from replicating the feats that Ferguson has achieved.
Everton are already looking at Sam Allardyce’s replacement after their own 6th consecutive away loss to Watford on the weekend. Wenger can be the ideal man to instil some structure into the team with the resources currently being provided by Iranian billionaire owner, Moshiri.
