Celtics are looking to further the talent pool in the summer window by signing Lovro Majer from Croatian football club, NK Lokomotiva. The 5 feet 9 inches shifty attacking midfielder has been monitored by the Hoops for quite some time and by the looks of it, interests of an immediate signature have been reignited by Brendan Rodgers.
Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, Marko Rog, Milan Badelj and Marcelo Brozovic are some of the most known names to have emerged from Croatia in the last decade, and Lovro Majer looks capable of following in their esteemed footsteps.
At just 20 years of age, Majer is earning rave reviews with Lokomotiva and appears to have all the attributes required to flourish for his national side with 3 caps for the youth ranks and 1 cap for the senior side, already under his belt.
Majer exploded onto the scene last season with four goals and 11 assists in all competitions and looks to have impressed over the course of 2017/18 campaign by scoring 10 and setting up a further 5 in 25 appearances in Croatia’s top flight.
The teenager is technically gifted and is a creative spark in the central areas, as witnessed by his impressive stat line for Lokomotiva. He also has the ability to control the tempo of the game from deep midfield while blessed with a real tenacity and work rate that marks him out at such a young age.
It is not too much to suggest, Majer combines the most impressive elements of Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong, Celtic’s first choice central midfielders.
He has Brown’s intelligence on and off the ball, replicating his ability to locate passing lanes and dictate play from deep.
And Majer could be a fine alternative to John McGinn, the long-standing target of the Scottish Champions who was also pegged to replace the ageing Brown. While McGinn might no longer be on radars, Majer is an even better candidate who will fit perfectly into Rodgers’ system.
The former Liverpool manager favours youngsters and has fielded one of the youngest sides in the Scottish top-flight and still come out on top.
While the resistance from rival sides seems to be heating up, it is in the best interest of the Glasgow side to keep improving their squad to match the competition. After winning the league for the last 6 seasons in a row, it is pretty obvious that they are targeting to do the same once again and the addition of a player like Majer might help them pursue the glory in the next term as well.
