As per one of the latest reports by Express & Star, Gabriel Agbonlahor’s 17-year relationship with Aston Villa is expected to terminate when his contract with the club expires at the end of the season.
There is no doubt that a few years ago, Agbonlahor used to be a prized asset for the Lions. However, he has scored just one goal in each of his last three seasons, which certainly tells us about the dilution of his stature.
It is about time for the 31-year-old to make a move from the Villa Park to salvage his career and here are three clubs that might interest him in the summer.
Nottingham Forest
Plying his trade in the Premier League would be too huge ask for him but he might fancy staying in the Championship. Nottingham Forest could be a decent choice for his next destination as it has not been easy for the Tricky Trees to find the back of the net on a regular basis.
The Englishman, despite having passed his prime, still can hold the ball well in the final third and link up with his offensive teammates. Besides, he is decently clinical and perhaps he needs some time and a word of confidence from his next manager to regain his form.
Atlanta United
Express & Star have stated the possibility of Agbonlahor’s move to the riches and lucre that Major League Soccer has on offer. The 31-year-old is Aston Villa’s all-time Premier League top goal-getter and he certainly is a well-known name in the game of football.
Atlanta United were perceived to be desirous to sign him last year and they might fancy going after him in the summer. A switch to the United States could be a fresh start for the hitman as he is in a dire need to resurrect his career by notching regular game time under his belt before it becomes too late to make a recovery.
Sunderland
Sunderland are likely to get doomed at the end of the season and there is no denying that they are going to lose some of their key players after the demotion. Chris Coleman would need to be shrewd in the summer and Agbonlahor is one of the players he should definitely target to beef up his attacking arsenal.
For the Black Cats, he could be the leader that they might need in the offensive sector as he is well acclimatized with English football. He is no longer the kind of dazzling player which he once used to be, but the volumes of experience he has under his belt would be a handy asset for Coleman next season.
