Max Meyer has reportedly rejected the second contract offered by Schalke and this is a cause for celebration among the Arsenal management. Schalke sporting executive, Christian Heidel said, “If Max Meyer approaches us and says he wants to continue playing for Schalke, that’s wonderful. But we can’t and won’t wait for much longer.”
The 22-year-old’s contract is set to end after this season and Arsene Wenger is ready to bring him to Emirates for a nominal transfer fee or even better – for free. Meyer has managed just 1 goal and 1 assists in his 25 appearances across all competitions this season and the low stat line can be attributed to him being shifted to the holding midfield role.
Meyer started out his footballing campaign as an attacking midfielder from the youth ranks of the Royal Blues and burst into the scene with an impressive debut season. Ever since Lewis Holtby departed from the Veltins-Arena, Meyer’s has seen himself get featured in the shadow striker role and was handed the number seven jersey in the 2013/14 season, the number last worn by Raul himself.
Standing at just 5 feet 8 inches tall, Meyer has mesmerized the fans in the Bundesliga with his silky dribbling abilities and creative instincts to link up the Schalke abilities. Fast feet paired with an agile body allows him to drift into tight spaces around the box and is a handful for opposition defenders.
Schalke have already lost Leon Goretzka on a free transfer to Bayern Munich and are set to lose another one of their young stars. Arsenal capitalized on Sead Kolasinac’s contract situation in the last summer window and successfully signed him up on a free transfer. The German outfit has turned into a charitable organization for the European elites and this is a huge cause of concern among the Miners fans.
Arsenal have already bolstered the club ranks over the January window by bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. They received Mkhitaryan on a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez and have extended Mesut Ozil’s contract till the summer of 2022. The North London are covered on the attacking midfield front and have options in Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere at the moment.
The club has seen Francis Coquelin make an exit to La Liga outfit, Valencia and while Mohamed Elneny has taken up the defensive responsibilities, Max Meyer is not the best candidate to replace the 26-year-old Frenchman.
Arsene Wenger has somehow wrenched out a win from what looked like a losing situation. He has tied down the services of the esteemed German maestro and this will allow him to rotate the squad around for the remainder of the season.
The only way Meyer can find himself at Emirates is if Jack Wilshere’s contract runs out in the summer and an extension is not agreed upon.
