Hull City goalkeeper Allan McGregor is set to leave the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season. According to recent reports, the ex-Rangers player has put Scottish Premiership teams on alert after declaring that he is ready to return to his homeland this summer.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper has been a regular feature for the Tigers this season and is also part of Alex McLeish’s Scotland squad for the upcoming friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary. McGregor has spent five seasons with Hull City since signing for them in the summer of 2013 from Besiktas. Some sources have recently claimed that the Scotland international is set to make a switch back to his home country as McGregor deems it to be a realistic option this summer.
In a recent interview, McGregor addressed his future and was quoted to have said, “Potentially, aye. A lot of reasons might be family factors for people coming back up the road.”
The veteran keeper does not expect to earn a new deal at Hull City beyond this season and also added, “I talked to them in July about it and they said, ‘Get the transfer window out the road’ and then we talked after the summer transfer window had closed and they said speak after January.
“Now we’re in March, so… But it’s not affected me. What’s going to happen is going to happen. You’re probably used to it here, to be honest.”
McGregor believes that he can still play a role for his country at the international stage but only time will tell if that’s the case for the Scottish keeper.
Hull City are currently in the 18th place in the Skybet Championship standings with a tally of 39 points after 38 league matches. The Tigers were flirting with disaster just a few weeks ago but a string of positive results has helped them put some distance between themselves and the dreaded relegation zone. The Tigers are currently six points above the drop zone with 8 matches remaining in this campaign.
The departure of McGregor could leave their squad depleted so the club needs to move quickly to bring in a replacement ahead of the new season if they are to have any chance of pushing for a promotion back to the Premier League in the near future. Hull City also have the likes of Will Mannion, David Marshall and Callum Burton to rely on but the jury is still out on those players and only time will tell whether they can cut the mustard at the KCOM Stadium.
McGregor has featured in 37 matches for the Tigers this season, conceding 56 goals while keeping 9 clean sheets. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the veteran keeper as he goes into the twilight of his career.
