Southampton are currently struggling in the Premier League and find themselves in 17th place with just 8 league games remaining in this campaign. The Saints are in dire need of some favourable results in the coming weeks following their 3-0 loss away to Newcastle United at the St. James Park on Saturday. It seems highly likely that they will be dragged into a relegation dogfight going into the final stretch of the season. The Premier League club sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday after the Argentine boss could only lead them to one victory in their last 17 league matches this season.
The managerless Southampton team are currently preparing for their FA Cup quarter-final clash versus Wigan Athletic on Sunday. Only time will tell whether they can avoid the agony of being relegated to the English Championship at the end of the season. For now, the Saints supporters will keep their fingers crossed and hope that their club will earn some positive results in the coming weeks to steer clear of danger.
If they do end up getting relegated, let’s take a look at three players they might have to consider selling in order to try and rebuild their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Nathan Redmond
The English speedster has been a regular starter for the Saints this season. He has featured in 28 matches for the South-coast club and has 3 assists to his name. His recent record suggests that the winger can benefit from a move out of the St. Mary’s Stadium in order to reignite his form at a new destination. Hence, the Saints should move him on and use the money generated from his sale to strengthen other areas of their squad.
Sofiane Boufal
The Morrocan midfielder has so far been all flash but no substance. At times, he has looked breathtaking on the ball while on most other occasions, his productivity has been lacking which makes a move out of Southampton a necessity for both the club and the player. He has made 28 appearances for the South-coast outfit this season, scoring two goals while providing two assists across all competitions.
Manolo Gabbiadini
The Italian forward has underperformed since making a switch from Napoli during the winter transfer period of 2017. He has made 28 appearances for the Saints this season, scoring just 4 goals in the league so far. One of the main reasons why the South-coast club has struggled this season is because of the lack of consistent goalscorers as evidenced by the Italian’s low tally of goals during the course of this campaign. They will do well to sell him for a significant fee and bring in some fresh faces going into the new campaign.
