Manchester City have been in imperious form this season. The boys from the Etihad have rolled over every team and Pep Guardiola is creating a monster that can rule football for years to come. He will no doubt seek further reinforcements in the summer and here are three players who he can target to finalise his team.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
The 23-year old Serbian midfielder currently plays for Lazio. The central midfielder is an action-packed player and has a tenacious engine to keep playing 90 minutes day in day out. His added quality of having a keen eye for goal is however what sets him apart for someone his age. With years of peak football ahead of him; it is no secret why the big clubs are chasing his signature. Since his move to Lazio in the summer of 2015, Savic has gone on to make over a 100 appearances for the club scoring over 20 goals and creating another 20. He will no doubt add many more as he continues to develop and Pep Guardiola could do with a player like him.
Mauro Icardi
Icardi moved to Inter Milan back in the summer of 2013 from fellow Serie A side Sampdoria and has since gone on to become a star player at San Siro. He has a contract with the Italian giants that run till 2021 and any party who might be interested in the Inter ace will have to fork out a fortune for the Argentine.
Icardi has gone on to make over 180 appearances for the club and has scored almost 100 goals in the process, adding another 25 assists as well in the process. He is a mainstay at the club and being given the captain’s armband, it is clear Inter expect him to stay at the club for the long run.
His heroics at the first Milan derby where he scored a hat-trick to sink Inter’s arch-rivals, has endeared him to the fans even more and it will cost way more than a mere transfer value of the player to take away Icardi. However, given Pep’s situation at City with Sergio Aguero ageing fast, Icardi could prove to be a pivotal replacement.
Luke Shaw
Shaw’s career developed in Southampton and he became not only a regular first-team player but a star with the Saints. He was developed and became a player of great potential under the then Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Finally in the summer of 2014, along came Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United and he signed Luke Shaw from Southampton for a hefty fee of £27m on a four-year deal. The then 19-year old promised a great future at Old Trafford but recurring injuries forced him out of the side and stagnated his career. He has now been at Old Trafford and has not played a single full season.
Shaw still, however, is young and has the talent to fulfil his potential. Benjamin Mendy’s injury showed that Pep is still short of one left back in the squad and Shaw could prove to be the final addition.
