Latest reports have confirmed that AC Milan have asked Chelsea to lay their hands off their star defender Alessio Romagnoli. With a move for the Italian now looking bleak, here are three replacements for Chelsea to look at.
Toby Alderweireld
The 29-year old Belgian centre-back has been speculated with transfer talks and it would appear that Tottenham Hotspur may be ready to move on the defender this summer. Alderweireld’s current deal runs till for another three seasons but it is also no secret that the Belgian is seeking an improved contract.
The defender signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2015 from Atletico Madrid for five years with an option to extend it by another year for Tottenham. However, Spurs are unlikely to consider such a move since it would activate his £25m release clause. Hence, club chairman, Daniel Levy does need to sit down and negotiate a new improved contract for the defender.
Since making his move from Atletico Madrid, he has gone on to become one of the top performers in England. His ability to read the opposition’s game allows him to defend neatly without making unnecessary tackles.
Jonny Evans
The former Red Devil defender has been one of the most sought-after targets for a number of big-name clubs in the Premier League, including the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal. The centre-back has been in good nick since the start of the season and it was reported that both Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola were looking at Evans as a possible option to strengthen their defensive third.
The former Manchester United player has drawn high praise from everyone for his impressive spell with the Baggies over the past two and a half years. The Northern Ireland international has been the only mentionable defensive player in the West Brom lineup side who have fallen to the relegation spot in the current campaign.
The West Brom captain played his best game under Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. The retired Scotsman played Evans in the centre back role ahead of a lot of talented options and won three league titles with him in the backline.
Harry Maguire
The Leicester City defender has drawn excellent praise from everyone around England this season. He has been a rock in defence next to Wes Morgan and has formed a strong backline for the Foxes. He is young and has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to defend with such vociferousness.
