Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen is happy with life in North London amidst interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona. According to recent reports, the Danish midfield enforcer is happy at Spurs and is looking to win trophies with the club in the near future, despite reports linking him with a move abroad.
The Denmark international penned a new deal with the North London outfit last season which will keep him at Spurs until the summer of 2020. In a recent interview, the 26-year-old was quoted to have said,
“To be honest, I don’t think like that.
“You play football in the present, but you have your dreams as well. Dreaming is one thing, but you don’t know what’s realistic until you see it on the table.
“Right now I think most players are very satisfied being at Tottenham, and so am I.”
Eriksen signed for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2013 from AFC Ajax and has since been a revelation under Mauricio Pochettino in the last few years. However, he is yet to win a trophy in English football which will be a cause for concern for Spurs fans. The last major trophy that Tottenham won was the 2008 League Cup so there are a lot of expectations on the current team to deliver a major silverware this term.
Eriksen recently helped Spurs qualify into the semifinals of the FA Cup where they will face off against Manchester United. Only time will tell whether they are successful in winning the competition this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently in 4th place in the Premier League standings, just five points above fifth-placed Chelsea with just 8 league matches remaining this term. The North London outfit are hoping to finish in the top 4 so that they can ensure Champions League football for the next campaign. They secured a comfortable 4-1 victory at the Vitality Stadium courtesy of a Heung-Min Son brace and a goal each from Dele Alli and Serge Aurier versus Bournemouth in their last league outing.
However, Spurs are still a staggering 20 points behind the league leaders Manchester City and are in dire need to retain some of their top talents like Eriksen in order to bridge the gap between themselves and the Manchester clubs in the coming years. The Danish midfielder has featured in 38 matches for Spurs this term, scoring 11 goals while creating 10 assists in all competitions. Hence, Eriksen’s comments about being satisfied in North London should come as welcome news for the club as he has the potential to be their star player for years to come.
Eriksen has been an integral member of Tottenham’s rise from Premier League mediocrity to a UEFA Champions League regular over the last few seasons so Pochettino will do well to hold on to him for the immediate future. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Eriksen and whether Spurs can hang on to him for the next few years.
