Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is currently on loan at Fulham, has stated his desire to make a return to his homeland of Serbia and play for Partizan Belgrade. According to recent reports, the Serbia international has not ruled out the possibility of making a switch back to his former club in order to reignite his career.
Some sources are now claiming that the 23-year-old forward’s destination when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season, is still unknown with Fulham lining up a permanent move for him if they are able to secure promotion back to the Premier League. Mitrovic is currently set to make his mark for the Serbia national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off later this year. In a recent interview, he commented on his current situation and was quoted to have said, “I respect Rafa Benitez’s decision not to play me and now I feel comfortable playing Fulham. I’m hoping that it will last,”
“Every gathering and every match – and even friendlies – is a chance for me, it’s a new fight for a place in the team and I’m going to try and doing my best. Then the selector decides.”
Mitrovic has made 9 appearances in the Skybet Championship this season, scoring 7 goals for Fulham so far. Only time will tell whether he can continue his recent good form and help the Cottagers gain a promotion back to the top tier of English football.
The Magpies are currently sitting in the 13th position in the Premier League standings with a tally of 32 points in 30 league matches. Rafael Benitez’s team find themselves just four points above the relegation zone and are in serious danger of being demoted to the Skybet Championship at the end of the campaign. They are in dire need to bring in some reinforcements during the summer transfer window which will help them in their quest to push on and improve their league performance next season.
The departure of Mitrovic in the summer could deplete their squad depth ahead of the new campaign so the Magpies should do all they can to bring in a suitable replacement who can cut the mustard at the St. James Park. It is clear that Benitez does not fancy the forward at Tyneside and a summer move looks set to be on the cards!
The Serbian forward has been prolific in front of goal since his move to Craven Cottage in January so a permanent move to the London club or a switch back to Serbia seems like the two viable options for the player to consider as he looks to re-establish himself as a regular goal-scorer in European football. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Mitrovic and whether he ends up making a switch out of Tyneside in the near future.
