Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has rejected the club’s new contract offer as he demands more money at the end of the season. According to recent reports, the Brazilian forward is holding out for more money from the Citizens with the Manchester outfit eager to tie him up on a new deal which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2023.
The 20-year-old has impressed since signing for City from Palmeiras in the January transfer period of 2017. However, he is stalling on contract talks with the club for now after declining a £90,000-a-week offer from City. Some sources are now claiming that the forward is willing to discuss fresh terms with the club in the summer but the player’s refusal to pen a revised contract offer will concern the Citizens going into the final stretch of the season.
It is being reported that Jesus is demanding a pay increase from his £50,000 weekly salary to £100,000-per-week which is more than what Pep Guardiola’s side are willing to pay at the moment. However, things change quickly in football and City fans will be hoping that their club can come to terms with the player’s demands and secure his long-term future at the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens are firmly in the driver’s seat as they look to earn another league title at the top tier of English football with a whopping 16 point lead over Manchester United.
Manchester City are still taking part in two different competitions and have already bagged the Carabao Cup in February. They have also managed to progress into the quarterfinals stages of the UEFA Champions League having secured a 5-2 aggregate win over FC Basel. The Blues of Manchester will now clash against Liverpool over two legs for a place in the semi-finals stage of Europe’s premier cup competition.
Retaining some of their star players like Jesus could go a long way in helping them maintain their dominance in both domestic and European football in the coming years. It is believed that City considers Jesus as a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero so it would be foolish to let him leave over a contract dispute. The Brazilian has made 32 appearances under Pep Guardiola this term, scoring 11 goals and providing 5 assists in all competitions. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Jesus and whether City are successful in retaining his services at the Etihad Stadium for the long-run.
