Arsene Wenger may yet be able to do enough to keep his place at the club for another season but his position at the Emirates is far from comfortable. He will have to work hard from now to the end of the season to retain his position but that has not stopped him from planning for the future of the club.
The Gunners need some established players, to help them compete with the best next season but Wenger is also keeping an eye on exciting youngsters, who can make a difference in years to come. One such player, Arsenal are set to make a move or in the summer is Brazilian starlet Maycon de Andrade Barberan, known as just Maycon.
Born and brought up in Sao Paulo, the 20-year old is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the domestic circuit in Brazil and has shown some great promise this season, in the Brazilian Serie A, where he plays for Sao Paulo giants Corinthians.
Having already represented the Brazilian U20 side eight times in his career, Maycon is a central midfielder, who made a name for himself in his time on loan at Ponte Preta in 2016. He cemented his place in the first team at Corinthians after coming back from that loan spell and has now turned into one of the most important players of the squad, and a regular name on the first team.
With a goal and two assists to show for in 32 Brasileirao starts this season, the 20-year old has shown that he is ready for the next big step and is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
The likes of SSC Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk are also interested in his services but reports from Brazil claim that Arsenal are leading the race for his signature. The Gunners were interested in him even in January and have reportedly been scouting him for a year now. They have also reportedly opened discussions over a possible move at the end of the season and could land him in the summer.
However, at just 20, with no appearances for the national side, Maycon will not find it easy to earn a work permit in the United Kingdom and the Gunners may have to wait a while to see him in an Arsenal shirt.
But they have done similarly with the likes of Carlos Vela and Joel Campbell in the past and might sign Maycon only to loan him out for a couple of years. He is a potential superstar but is Maycon the right man for Arsenal?
