Watford are being linked with a move for Olympique Marseille midfielder André Zambo Anguissa ahead of the summer transfer window. According to recent reports, the Hornets are set to battle it out with a whole host of Premier League clubs in pursuit of the 22-year-old’s signature.
The Cameroon international is currently playing his football at Ligue 1 side Marseille where he has made 20 league appearances this season and helped his club climb to the third place in the top tier of French football. Some sources have recently claimed that the Hertfordshire club are set to clash heads with the likes of Newcastle United, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion on the hunt to secure his signature.
Anguissa has also earned 11 international caps for the Cameroon national team during his career and has two international goals to his name. It is understood that Marseille are reluctant to part ways with their prized asset as they look to qualify for the Champions League next season. At 22, he still has his peak years ahead of him which Watford could look to utilise in the coming years. Only time will tell whether the Hornets boss Javi Gracia can convince the Ligue 1 outfit to sell their midfield ace next summer.
Watford are currently sitting in 11th place in the Premier League standings with a tally of 30 points in 27 league matches. They are still just four points above the drop zone with just 11 games remaining in this campaign. The Hornets are hoping for a change in fortunes under their new boss Javi Gracia with a home game against Everton looming on the horizon. The addition of Anguissa will definitely bolster Gracia’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign.
The Hornets has the likes of Abdoulaye Doucouré, Étienne Capoue and Tom Cleverley in their central midfield and there is no doubt that Anguissa has the ability to compete with the midfield trio for a place in Gracia’s starting eleven at Vicarage Road. He will improve Watford’s squad depth which is exactly what the doctor ordered after their lacklustre Premier League performance in recent months.
However, the Cameroon midfielder is still untested at the top level and could need some time to adapt his game to the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Anguissa and whether Watford are able to fend off stiff competition and win the race for his signature in the near future.
