Tottenham secured their passage to the 5th round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Newport County in their replay after a 1-1 draw last week. A Dan Butler own goal and a cute finish from Eric Lamela in the space of 8 first-half minutes sealed a comfortable win for the Lily Whites.
Spurs enjoyed a comfortable evening at Wembley and rarely needed to get out of second gear. Apart from an early scare, Spurs dominated the whole of the first half in terms of possession and chances and were rewarded for their pressure when Butler turned Sissoko’s cross into his own net. Lamela netted Spurs’ second 8 minutes later when he finished well from Son’s pass.
The second half saw Spurs dominate completely but their poor finishing stopped them from extending their lead. Lamela, Alli and Llorente were guilty of missing gilt-edged chances but it didn’t cost Spurs as they cruised to the next round to face Rochdale away from home.
Here are the Tottenham Hotspur player ratings from their comfortable victory
Michel Vorm- 6/10
Made a sloppy pass early in the first half and apart from a decent stop in second-half stoppage time, had nothing to do.
Serge Aurier- 7/10
Comfortable night for the ex-PSG man as he bombed forward at will.
Juan Foyth- 6/10
Slightly nervous start for the 20-year-old as he made a few risky passes, one of which earned Wanyama a booking.
Toby Alderweireld- 6.5/10
Made his return on an easy night. Passing was a bit rusty, however.
Danny Rose- 7.5/10
A fine display from the Englishman. Made a couple of excellent runs in the attacking half and was unlucky to not get an assist.
Victor Wanyama- 7/10
Got a booking 8 minutes into the game when Foyth’s pass sold him short but steadied himself after that.
Harry Winks- 7.5/10
Made the most of his start with a good performance. Sprayed the ball around nicely and kept the play ticking.
Moussa Sissoko- 6.5/10
Got into good positions but was let down by his final pass too often.
Erik Lamela- 7.5/10
Scored a well-taken goal and put on a very good display. Buzzed all around the frontline and should’ve scored another.
Heung-Min Son- 7.5/10
An efficient performance from the South Korean as he always provided width and regularly beat his man on the left side. His low crosses always caused havoc in the Newport box.
Fernando Llorente- 7/10
Held the ball up very well for the first goal and linked play up nicely. Spurned a glorious chance in the second half.
SUBSTITUTES
Christian Eriksen (Son 61’) – 7/10
Immediately made a difference and created a lot of chances that his teammates missed.
Dele Alli (Wanyama 78’) – 6.5/10
Caused problems in his brief cameo with his dribbling and hit the crossbar.
