Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic has been subjected to further transfer speculation with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly interested in securing the services of the player in the upcoming summer. The 23-year old is also reportedly on the radar of Manchester United, Juventus and former club Inter Milan as well.
The 23-year old who currently plays for Real Madrid has found it difficult to break into the first-team on a regular basis. The likes of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Isco and Casemiro have been in tremendous form for Zinedine Zidane’s team. With the first-team action looking hard to come by right now, Kovacic might want to snap up the opportunity to move to North London.
Real Madrid already has a host of midfield talent in their squad in the form of Marco Asensio, Isco, Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos, Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Mateo Kovacic who can all play through the centre. Asensio and Isco are supposedly the future of the club and Kroos and Casemiro form the crux of the current team and are expected to be the backbone of the midfield for the coming years. However, with Modric at the dusk of his career and Ceballos unable to settle in, Kovacic is set to become a vital member at the Bernabeu over the years and this might prompt him against a move to Tottenham.
As for Tottenham, while Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks are the four regular choices for the two available deeper midfield positions, Spurs also have Sissoko and Alli who can play as makeshift midfielders.
This would mean that with such an abundance of talent not only in the form of youth and experience but also guile and steel means, Spurs can boast of having one of the best collection of players in the middle of the park.
However, Dembele being prone to injury and not having the best season this time around, the seasoned professional may be nearing his end at the top level. His usual partner Victor Wanyama is one of the strongest holding midfielders in the league. Wanyama provides the steel base and protects the back four but lacks the natural ability to spread the play. Dier has been a gem in the Tottenham midfield and his ability to play as a makeshift centre-back makes him an absolute asset for the team. This would mean Kovacic would certainly have less but healthy competition at Spurs as well, something that will allow the player to flourish.
Kovacic at the age of 23 has won seven trophies for Real. However, not being able to break into the first team with his best years ahead of him will frustrate the Serbian. He was predicted to be an exciting prospect with great potential to excel while playing for Inter Milan and will want to fulfil that prophecy. Will Tottenham Hotspur be the place where he finally proves his mettle?
