Sources close to PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn have revealed to ESPN about interests coming in from a host of Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur. Mauricio Pochettino is a man known for fielding young talents and acquiring a 20-year-old winger would go hand-in-hand with his philosophy.
Bergwijn has started to draw the eyes of many due to his impressive performances for the Dutch outfit this season. He has racked up 5 goals and 6 assists in 26 total appearances so far into the campaign. A brilliant right foot paired with scintillating pace on the wings is already turning out to be a nightmare for the Eredivisie full-backs.
Bergwijn started out his professional career with the Dutch second division club, Jong PSV where he made his debut at a young age of just 17. He has also been capped at international level for the Netherlands U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 sides all around 36 times.
The ability to break open the opposition defence from the wide areas is no easy task for such a young player and yet Bergwijn is delivering on a regular basis for the PSV first team. These are promising signs that elite clubs look for in youngsters and Bergwijn might just thrive against elite competition in the Premier League.
Tottenham already have one of the youngest squads in the league and can do with a top class winger like Bergwijn. They have bolstered the ranks through the signing of Lucas Moura in the January window but the Brazilian is yet to start a game.
The North London club came back from 2-0 down to draw against previous season’s Champions League finalists, Juventus on Tuesday. Pochettino’s men maintained their poise against the experienced European contenders to come away with 2 huge away goals.
Pochettino had the options of Lucas, Moussa Sissoko and Erik Lamela on the wings and chose to go with the latter. While Lamela did work hard off the ball, the Argentine struggled to find his feet offensively. He still needs some time to work his way into first-team football after spending almost a year on the sidelines.
Sissoko, on the other hand, has lacked quality ever since the start of the season and cannot be relied upon in such big fixtures. Pochettino is well aware of the depth a squad needs to compete in multiple competitions in a single season. He paid the price in the earlier stages of the campaign when Champions League football was scheduled along with the Premier League matches in a single week and his team started to drop crucial points.
With Lamela in for a doubt over continuing with the English outfit in the near future, Bergwijn might be a wonderful addition to the wing for the North London club.
