Sunderland are looking to secure the services of Wigan Athletic centre-back Donervon Daniels next summer. According to recent reports in the English press, the 24-year-old defender is currently gathering interest from a whole host of Championship clubs which includes the Black Cats as well as Cardiff City and Norwich City. The Championship trio has monitored his progress during his loan spell at Rochdale this season and are eager to sign him on a free transfer when his contract runs out at the end of the season.
Wigan manager Paul Cook decided to recall him for the final six months of his contract at the DW Stadium but the League One leaders would be helpless in the summer when his contract runs out. The Latics won’t be able to prevent him from negotiating a move to another club at the end of the current campaign. Daniels was an integral member for Wigan during their last promotion to the second-tier but missed the bulk of the last campaign with a knee injury. He has proven his fitness during a loan spell at Rochdale which led to the Wigan boss admitting that he was impressed by Daniels’ form after considering looking at the market for a replacement.
Daniels has featured in 21 matches for Rochdale this season across all competitions but is yet to find the back of the net so far. Wigan could look to tie him up on a new deal rather than look for a replacement in the summer transfer window.
Sunderland currently occupies the 23rd place in the Championship table with a tally of just 26 points after 31 league matches. They are in real danger of getting relegated at the end of the current campaign. The Black Cats need to turn their fortunes for the better in the coming weeks to have any chance of saving their Championship lives this term.
However, if they do end up getting relegated, the addition of Daniels will undoubtedly bolster Coleman’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign. At 24, the English midfielder is yet to hit his peak years and can flourish at the Stadium of Light if given the opportunity to display his talents.
He could turn out to be shrewd acquisition if Sunderland can fend off stiff competition from fellow Championship rivals, Cardiff City and Norwich City. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the 24-year-old and whether the Black Cats can lure him to ply his trade at the Stadium of Light next summer.
