Recent reports claim that Real Madrid are ready to completely change the face of the final third over the next summer window. Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski has been marked as Karim Benzema’s replacement as the Frenchman has been misfiring throughout the current season, piling on the woes for Zinedine Zidane.
Lewandowski’s name is synonymous with goals and any club would be willing to acquire his services. The Polish-international has spent the last 3-and-a-half years with Der FCB and has racked up a staggering 139 goals in 181 all around appearances. He even managed to grab himself 4 Guinness World Record certificates after scoring 5 goals in a single match, the fastest hattrick and the only player to do so in the Bundesliga.
He came to the Allianz Arena to chase even bigger trophies than he had managed with Borussia Dortmund, under Klopp. He was on the wrong end of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley which saw his current employers lift the trophy.
Lewandowski has managed 3 successive Bundesliga titles and is well poised to win his 4th but the league is hardly a competition for the German giants at this point. The European trophy has eluded him and this might have raised a few questions about his future with the Bavarians.
And where else is a better option to play out your career than the current reigning European champions themselves? Real Madrid got the better of PSG with a 3-1 win at Santiago Bernabeu and the responsibility of making a comeback in the second leg will be heavily rested on Neymar’s teammates now that he has been ruled out with an ankle injury. It is a shame that Madrid will face a PSG team without their star attacker, but still judging by the 1-0 loss they just suffered to Espanyol on Tuesday night, one cannot guarantee progression to the next stage of the competition.
Florentino Perez is hell-bent on getting the Brazilian to the Bernabeu and is already set up the tracks for his arrival. The Madrid president might look to offload a bunch of club veterans who are seemingly not performing up to the required standards.
Lewandowski’s arrival will be an answer to the mishitting Benzema while Cristiano Ronaldo is still the uncontested starter. However, Ronaldo’s future is uncertain with the Galacticos and a marquee signing is beckoning on his departure.
Lewandowski can turn out to be a shrewd acquisition but it is unlikely that Madrid will make a huge fuss over a player who is about to turn 30 years old. Maybe they are better off chasing the talents of Harry Kane.
