Facing PSG in the Round of 16 of the UCL and lagging 19 points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid are in a real spot of bother. They won back to back UCL trophies before the start of the current season but they look a shadow of themselves in this campaign, turning out to be second best for many games.
The quality in the squad was reduced by the exit of Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez and youngsters like Marco Asensio, Isco and Dani Ceballos have failed to provide enough impetus to get some results for their side.
But what has hurt them more was the injuries that Gareth Bale has constantly picked up and the loss of form for star attackers Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Zidane might have to replace at least one of those names at the end of the season and he already has a wish-list that he will want to tick off before the start of the next campaign. One player who they might find easy to lure to the Spanish capital is Bayern Munich star, Robert Lewandowski.
A transfer target for Los Blancos even in the summer, Lewandowski has been his usual self, scoring 18 goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances this season. However, he has now decided to end his stay in Germany and wants a move to Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.
Arguably one of the most consistent strikers in world football at the moment, the Polish international will turn 30 at the start of the next season and is not a long-term option but he can certainly replace the French striker that is struggling at Bernabeu.
A story from Marca today claims that Real Madrid will sell Benzema in the summer and could land Lewandowski, who is open to a move. His current contract at Bayern runs till 2021 but it is understood that the German giants could let him leave if he want a move to La Liga. So should Real make a move for him?
As already explained, Benzema needs a quality replacement in the first team but the lack of form of players around him will make it that much difficult. Real Madrid need players who can make an immediate impact and Lewandowski is one of their best choices available.
They will need to also replace Cristiano Ronaldo in the near future and the Polish international can act as a short-term fix, giving the club enough time to land their top transfer targets and complete their squad overhaul.
