Real Madrid has been linked with yet another budding star in the game of football. This time, it is 22-year old Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic or as he likes to be called, Savic, in short. The central midfielder is an action-packed player and has a tenacious engine to keep playing 90 minutes day in day out.
His added quality of having a keen eye for goal is however what sets him apart for someone his age. With years of peak football ahead of him; it is no secret why the big clubs are chasing his signature. Since his move to Lazio in the summer of 2015, Savic has gone on to make over a 100 appearances for the club scoring almost 20 goals and creating around 15.
He will no doubt add much more as he continues to develop at Lazio. A player with an engine to run for 90 minutes he would certainly shape the Madrid midfield for years to come.
However, his potential move to Real Madrid will no doubt see him spending plenty of time on the bench, something he cannot afford to do at this point in his career. Moreover, in Lazio, he has found a steady place in the team and staying put for at least another season might help his case as he will certainly get regular game time there.
Real Madrid already has a host of midfield talent in their squad in the form of Marco Asensio, Isco, Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos, Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Mateo Kovacic who can all play through the centre.
While Asensio and Isco are supposedly the future of the club, Kroos and Casemiro form the crux of the current team and are expected to be the backbone of the midfield for the coming years. However, with Modric at the dusk of his career and Kovacic unable to settle in, Savic could still become a vital member of the Bernabeu over the years.
Moreover, given the pack of suitors chasing him, Real Madrid would be a perfect foil for him. Logically for the Serbian as well, it would make more sense to join the Madrid side where he would certainly be guaranteed more game time and could possibly take over the starting midfielder for Zidane’s team in the coming years.
It remains to be seen though how much Lazio charges for him given that they have signed him to a new contract at the club that will see him stay until 2021.
