Newcastle United have been through a lot of ups and downs this season in the Premier League after making a comeback into the top flight having spent the last season in the Championship and winning it comfortably. They are currently in 13th position in the league table and have been able to scrap out only 7 wins from their 27 games this term so far.
While it has been a season of disappointments for the Magpies and their gaffer Rafa Benitez in the transfer window, not everything has gone the other way for them. Their existing crop of players have tried to give their best on the pitch and all the 25 points that the Tyneside club have gathered so far this season, is the result of their determined display and the management is looking to reward them for that.
The latest example is the 26-year-old defender Paul Dummett, who has been signed to a new four-year mega deal by the Magpies. The left-back has made nine appearances in the Premier League this season and has more to offer to the club, as per the remarks of their Spanish manager Rafa Benitez.
He said, “If you talk about players that are important for the team, normally people talk about goalscorers, midfielders and number tens but in modern football, there are not too many consistent left-sided full-backs.
“Paul is exactly that; he understands the game and you know what you can expect from him week in, week out.
“That’s important when you have a lot of big games.
“He’s a player you can trust.
“He was unlucky to miss the first four months of the season through injury, but he’s a player who is quick to learn and knows his job really well.
“His return has given us more competition in a position where we did not have too much before, so we’re really pleased to keep him.”
Dummett is known for his robust presence in the backline and though not the best of runners with the ball up and down the pitch, knows his job pretty well and can help to keep his side out of harm’s way. Though he missed a chunk of the season through injury, as stated earlier, the 26-year-old is looking confident and is more than happy to extend his stay at the Tyneside club.
He said, “It’s my boyhood club and I’ve been a supporter for many years so to extend my stay at the club for even longer is really important to me.
“I’ve always wanted to stay here and the manager and the club have wanted to keep me so I’m really pleased to have signed the new contract and hopefully there are many more years to come.”
