Newcastle United are being linked with a move for Olympique Marseille midfielder André Zambo Anguissa next summer. According to recent reports, the Magpies are set to go head to head with a whole host of Premier League clubs in pursuit of the 22-year-old’s signature.
The Cameroon international is currently plying his trade at Ligue 1 side Marseille where he has featured in 20 league matches this season and helped his club climb to the third place in Ligue 1. Some sources have recently claimed that the Tyneside club are set to battle it out with the likes of Watford, West Ham United and West Brom in the race to secure his services.
Anguissa has also earned 11 international caps for Cameroon during his career and has scored two goals for his country so far. It is believed that Marseille are reluctant to part ways with their prized asset as they look to secure Champions League qualification for next season. At 22, he still has his peak years ahead of him which Newcastle United could look to utilise in the coming years. Only time will tell whether the Magpies boss Rafael Benitez can convince the French club to sell their midfield ace next summer.
The Magpies are currently sitting in the 13th place in the Premier League table with a tally of 28 points in 27 league matches. Rafa Benitez’s team still finds themselves just two points above the drop zone and are in real danger of suffering the agony of being relegated to the Skybet Championship at the end of the season.
They are in dire need of bringing in some fresh faces during the summer transfer period in their quest to push on and improve their Premier League performance in the next campaign if they do survive the drop. However, the potential addition of Anguissa will undoubtedly bolster Benitez’s midfield options at the club even if the Tyneside club drops into the Championship.
The Magpies currently has the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Mohamed Diamé and Mikel Merino in their central midfield so Anguissa definitely has the ability to compete with the midfield trio for a place in Benitez’s starting eleven at St. James Park. He will improve the Magpies’ squad depth which is exactly what the doctor ordered after their disappointing Premier League campaign so far.
However, the Cameroon midfielder is still unproven at the top level and could need some time to adapt his game to the physicality and high intensity of English football. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Anguissa and whether Newcastle are able to fend off stiff competition and win the race for his signature.
