Besiktas are plotting a move for Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini next summer. According to a report by Talksport, the Turkish club are planning to reach an agreement with the Red Devils midfielder in the summer transfer window after failing to strike a deal for his services in January, with the club reportedly held talks with the player’s agent in December. However, negotiations broke down between the two clubs in the winter transfer period before a formal offer could be placed for the Belgian’s signature.
Some sources are now claiming that the Turkish club will return with an offer for Fellaini this summer after making his signing their top priority ahead of the new campaign. The 30-year-old’s current contract with the Manchester club is set to expire at the end of the ongoing season, which means that he can leave the club on a free transfer in July. Only time will tell whether they can convince the Belgian to make a move to Turkey.
Fellaini has featured in 16 matches for United this season and has found the back of the net 4 times while making one assist so far in all competitions. His time at Manchester this term has been plagued with injuries so he has been a sporadic player under Jose Mourinho and could benefit from a move elsewhere in the summer.
Manchester United are currently sitting in second place in the Premier League table with a tally of 56 points in 27 league matches. In any other campaign, Jose Mourinho’s side would be well in contention of winning the league but the record-breaking form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has seen them fall behind in the race for the league title. The Citizens of Manchester are leading the Premier League by a massive 16 points with the Red Devils desperately trying to play catch up with their ‘noisy neighbours’.
The departure of Fellaini could significantly weaken the United midfield and reduce their squad depth going into the future. Mourinho would require to bring in a worthy replacement capable of filling his shoes at the centre of the park.
However, the Belgian is likely to benefit from a switch and consider his options elsewhere in search of greener pastures. He is a big threat aerially due to his commanding presence which Besiktas should look to utilise if they are successful in acquiring his services next summer. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Belgian and whether Besiktas are able to lure him to Turkey in the near future.
