Manchester City are preparing to offer their goalkeeper Ederson a new contract just seven months after he made a move to Manchester. According to recent reports in the English media, the Citizens are lining up a new deal for the Brazilian keeper following his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in June last year. He has been in terrific form for the club this season and has put in some eye-catching displays which include a terrific last-minute penalty save away at Crystal Palace.
The jury was out when the 24-year-old made a switch to Manchester for a world record fee in the region of £34m at the time. However, he has answered his critics in emphatic fashion and now, City are on the verge of clinching their third Premier League title at the end of the season. It is believed that the club hierarchy are looking to reward him with improved terms which will see him get a significant rise from his lowly £70,000-a-week wages. The Brazilian international’s contract with the Manchester outfit runs until the summer of 2022, but City boss Pep Guardiola reckons that he can be the club’s first-choice keeper for nearly the next decade.
A source close to the club was quoted to have said: “The club is already looking at giving Ederson a new deal at the club.
“He was an expensive purchase but has been worth every penny. He has delighted Pep how quickly he’s settled in.
“There is not a rush on him but the club will make sure he is looked after in the long-term.”
The Citizens are currently leading the Premier League table with a tally of 72 points in 27 league matches. They are in cruise control as they look to earn another league title at the top tier of English football with a staggering 16 point lead over their crosstown rivals Manchester United. Pep Guardiola’s side are still participating in four different competitions, having already secured qualification to the final of the Carabao Cup while also going through into the fifth round draw of the FA Cup.
Manchester City will do well to secure the Brazilian keeper’s long-term future at the club. He has made some crucial saves in this campaign and the expectation is that he will get stronger under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage in the coming years. He has featured in 32 matches for the Citizens this term, conceding 25 goals and keeping 16 clean sheets.
The Premier League champions-elect also have Claudio Bravo as their second choice keeper who is capable enough to push Ederson for a place in Guardiola’s starting eleven. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Brazilian keeper and whether City are able to tie him up on a new and improved contract in the near future.
