Schalke 04 midfielder Max Meyer has been linked with a move to Anfield. The 22-year-old is hot property in the transfer market right now because of his contract situation. Clubs like AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Arsenal are also keen on the youngster and will challenge Liverpool for the player’s signature. His current contract expires at the end of the current season and he is set to become a free agent then making him a lucrative prospect in the inflated market.
Meyer started out his footballing campaign as an attacking midfielder from the youth ranks of the Royal Blues and burst into the scene with an impressive debut season. Ever since Lewis Holtby departed from the Veltins-Arena, Meyer’s has seen himself get featured in the shadow striker role and was handed the number seven jersey in the 2013/14 season, the number last worn by Raul himself.
Standing at just 5 feet 8 inches tall, Meyer has mesmerized the fans in the Bundesliga with his silky dribbling abilities and creative instincts to link up the Schalke attack. Fast feet paired with an agile body allows him to drift into tight spaces around the box and he is a handful for opposition defenders.
Schalke have already lost Leon Goretzka on a free transfer to Bayern Munich and if reports are to be believed, they could be set to lose another one of their young stars in Meyer with Liverpool interested in the German. The German outfit has turned into a charitable organization for the European elites and this is a huge cause of concern among the Miners fans.
As for Liverpool, they will look at Meyer as an ideal replacement for Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian played out of his skin for the last few years at Anfield and it is worrying for Liverpool fans to think of the creativity aspect of the team with him gone. He left Liverpool for a whopping £142 million leaving a hole in the Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.
Klopp has been known for his heavy metal style of football. A certain attacking finesse complimented by an aggressive-minded team that can go on scoring goals and pass the ball around dangerously with a positive flair all day long is the order of the day at Liverpool. His game suits players who can tenaciously break down rigid defences with flair and panache and replacing Coutinho will now have to be his top priority next summer.
Such a situation would make the signing of Max Meyer a perfect solution for Liverpool as it would not only give them a young and technically strong player but also a new face for practically no money.
