Reports have surfaced suggesting a possible club exit of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski for the Premier League in the summer. Liverpool have been touted to be one of the 29-year-old’s probable destinations due to his strong links with the Reds current manager, Jurgen Klopp.
Rumours over a transfer for the Polish marksman are not exactly brand new and the German outfit had previously fended off interests by reminding everybody about Lewandowski’s contract till 2021. However, after spending all of his stardom years in the Bundesliga, it looks like the Polish international might be in the market for a fresh challenge.
The Premier League is always an illustrious career move for any professional footballer. Zlatan Ibrahimovic made the switch late in his career and flourished with Manchester United last season. Even Cristiano Ronaldo has been seen looking into living quarters and schools for his eldest son in the United Kingdom and has been tied to making a probable return.
Lewandowski has spent the last 3-and-a-half years with Der FCB and has racked up an impressive record of 139 goals in 181 all around appearances. He even managed 4 Guinness World Record certificates after scoring 5 goals in a single match, fastest hattrick and the only player to do so in the Bundesliga as of yet, maybe forever.
He came to the Allianz Arena to chase even bigger trophies than he could with Borussia Dortmund, under Jurgen Klopp. He was on the wrong end of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley which saw his current employers lift the trophy.
Lewandowski has managed 3 successive Bundesliga titles and is well poised to win his 4th but the league is hardly a competition for the German giants at this point. The European trophy has eluded him and this might have raised a few questions about his future with the Bavarians.
However, is Liverpool the ideal club to chase the illustrious trophy?
Granted Klopp is at the reign of the Premier League outfit and will be delighted to reunite with his former number nine. Lewandowski’s name is synonymous with goals and any club would be willing to acquire his services.
But Klopp has set a different system in place at the Anfield. He currently does not integrate a traditional number nine in his attack and prefers a more dynamic Roberto Firmino to lead the charge. The Brazilian has been in remarkable form this season with 22 goals and 12 assists and Klopp will have a hard time demoting him to a backup role.
Maybe Firmino can return to his past role of an attacking midfielder now that Philippe Coutinho has departed for Barcelona and Lewandowski can be implemented in the lone striker option.
