Manchester United are looking to rival Real Madrid’s interests in Inter Milan forward, Mauro Icardi whose release clause is reported to be €100m. The Argentine has been at the heart of a controversy over the weekend over a possible rift with his wife, Wanda Icardi. He also missed the team’s 1-1 draw against Crotone last night due to a muscle injury,
Icardi has been a standout performer in the Serie A this season grabbing 18 goals in 22 appearances and has been one of the most consistent figures in what looks to be a very inconsistent Inter Milan. The Black and Blues have dropped out of the title race after a series of lacklustre displays ever since December. They started off the season in sparkling form but has fallen victim to their own bad habits and complacency.
Luciano Spalletti is trying to get the team back to winning ways but now to no avail. They are on a winless run which has stretched to an embarrassing 8 games now and Icardi’s relationship with his teammates are turning sour as the days are progressing. Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic had confronted the 24-year-old over his performances in the 1-1 draw to SPAL last week and judging by their social media activities, Icardi is no longer a leader of the Milan side.
The former Sampdoria striker is a modern-day number nine who can do almost everything on the pitch. An athletic and pacey presence coupled with a deft touch on the ball makes him one of the most lethal attackers inside the penalty box. Icardi’s talents are quite similar to what Karim Benzema showcases at Santiago Bernabeu, just a tad bit more ruthless in front of goal.
Jose Mourinho, on the other hand, is dealing with a crisis in the striker position with their recent signing Romelu Lukaku failing to meet the lofty standards of the United faithful. The Belgian’s 18-goal tally will give you a false sense of success he has had this season. He arrived at Old Trafford for £75m and has so far struggled to justify his price tag.
United got completely outclassed by Tottenham Hotspur last weekend at Wembley and lost 2 goals to nil. The entire team failed to get any rhythm going to formulate a quality attack and Mourinho was left frustrated over his side’s shambolic display from the sidelines. Clearly, he is not satisfied with the players he already has and is eager to sign more. Even though Ed Woodward has been more than accommodating of his wishes, maybe the Portuguese tactician should prioritize the signing of a top-pedigree left-back.
