Everton’s rebuilding process is not done just yet and the Premier League side have now drawn their eyes towards TSG 1899 Hoffenheim midfielder, Kerem Demirbay. The 24-year-old is a summer target of multiple European sides including, Arsenal, Liverpool, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid. However, maybe Everton and the rest will have to put their transfer hopes aside at the moment now that Demirbay is ruled out with an ankle injury for the foreseeable future.
The German international picked up a horrific injury after clashing with Jordan Torunarigha in the 1-1 draw against Hertha Berlin earlier on Saturday. He was rushed to the Martin Luther Hospital to determine the severity of the injury. Hoffenheim manager, Julian Nagelsmann was quoted, “This isn’t good news, although we were worried it might be a more serious injury. We now need to support Kerem as much as we can to help him recover as quickly as possible.”
Demirbay is an attacking midfielder by trade and has been with Die Kraichgauer since the summer of 2016. He has racked up 5 assists and 2 goals in 23 all around appearances this season only to miss the entire month of January with a thigh injury. Demirbay has played his entire professional career in Germany so far and developed his game away on loan spells to lower division sides like 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Fortuna Dusseldorf. He is a product of the Borussia Dortmund youth setup and went on to make 28 appearances for the II side.
It was at the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar-Arena where he found his footballing boots and started to showcase his talents at the grand European stage. He earned himself two crucial assists in his team’s 3-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Europa League group stage to give his team a fighting chance of making it into the next round but unfortunately ended up bowing out of the competition dead last.
Demirbay has been capped at international level 2 times but is yet to break into a top-choice player for Joachim Lowe for the next FIFA World Cup. Blessed with a brilliant left foot, the Herten-born midfielder’s creativity and composure on the ball has mesmerized Hoffenheim fans for the past two and a half years.
Everton are in need of a second option behind the likes of a veteran Wayne Rooney. Sam Allardyce has Gylfi Sigurdsson as a playmaker, but the Iceland international has looked far from the quality he displayed for Swansea City. All of us fans and journalists alike are wishing for Demirbay to have a speedy recovery and take the further step into his career by playing in the Premier League.
