Michy Batshuayi has had a dream start to his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund. The on-loan player from Chelsea has finally been getting the striker role he craved for at Chelsea. He has not failed his new team and has delivered with 5 goals and 1 assist in 4 games. The forward’s bright start has already reawakened the interest of the interest of the Dortmund chiefs to sign him on a permanent transfer.
“We tried our best to get a permanent option for Michy Batshuayi but it was a no-go for Chelsea,” Watzke said. “It was not possible to get a purchase option because if Roman Abramovich says no, then it means no. There is always a chance, although if he scores in every game, it will be difficult,” Watzke added.
“Unless he says that he wants to remain with the BVB. We talked to him four years ago and watched him. The fact that he has taken this course [to come on loan] is a stroke of luck for us as he fits in quite well with the team.”
The 24-year-old Belgian striker was brought from Marseille for £33.1m in 2016. He arrived from the French club with a decent reputation as a talented hitman who had scored 23 goals in 50 games for the French club in the 2015-16 season.
However, ever since his arrival to Chelsea, he has had to play as a backup option; first to Diego Costa and now to Alvaro Morata. When Morata hit an unfortunate snag in the middle against Manchester City when and limped off in the 35th minute clutching his left hamstring, Conte decided to snub Michy Batshuayi, who is a direct replacement for Morata and introduce Willian instead, showing his lack of faith in Chelsea’s back-up striker.
Batshuayi despite scoring 10 goals this season had not shown the consistency Conte demanded and the Italian’s decision to rebuff the striker for the City match exposed Chelsea’s lack of options up front while in crisis. However, the striker is still young and has space to improve his other aspects of the game. He has scored 19 goals in 53 matches for Chelsea and is contracted to the Blues till 2021, meaning that he will have to return to the club come May.
Chelsea should in no way consider selling Batshuayi on a permanent basis as he has the potential to become one of the better number nines in the game and should be concerned about how to fit him into the current set up quickly without having to loan him out.
