The long-lasting rumour of Real Madrid chasing one of the two top keepers in English football has now taken a new turn. The Galacticos are clearly not happy with their custodian Keylor Navas despite the Costa Rican putting in some world-class performances over the last few years.
It is believed Madrid want a high-profile goalkeeper and are looking to bring in either David De Gea from Manchester United or Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois. The Chelsea custodian sparked controversy recently after claiming that his “heart lies in Madrid”.
“My personal situation is related to the city of Madrid,” he said. “My two children live there with their mum. I have my daughter every day on FaceTime. She often tells me that she misses me. My son is still too small to communicate like that.
“Whenever I have the opportunity, I try to return to Spain. As a situation, it is not always easy. Yes, my heart is in Madrid. It is logical and understandable.
“If they want me, they have to contact Chelsea. We’ll see. But they have not done that. What is certain is that one day I will return to Madrid. I love Spain, I love the city, I spent three wonderful years there [with Atletico Madrid]. It is there that I became an adult.
Courtois was honest with his opinion and as for the quote about his “heart being in Madrid”, he was talking about his family. However, with the goalkeeper stating that he is yet to decide his future as contract talks at Chelsea had stalled, it gave the media a new topic to light on fire.
He had said: “I have not made a decision on my future. I said my heart was in Madrid because I have my two children there, and it was misinterpreted. This situation is not easy for me. I still have a year on my contract (at Chelsea), I am happy and I can also extend. I do not forget that Chelsea has supported me since the beginning. I do not think Florentino Perez (Real Madrid president) will call me. But he will call my agent, who will listen to him.”
It now seems that Chelsea have been alerted enough and the Blues are preparing a new offer for the Belgian. The deal would see Courtois become the highest paid goalkeeper in the game at £200,000-a-week. The Stamford Bridge outfit cannot afford to lose Courtois and will want to pen the new deal as soon as possible before Florentino Perez comes around with a ridiculous offer to snatch away the prized asset from Chelsea.
