Celtic fans will be thrilled to hear that their beloved Hoops are willing to break their transfer record to sign a player ahead of the following season. When asked about the possibility of making a big-money move, assistant coach, Chris Davies said, “I think the club will support if it is the right player. Brendan works closely with Peter [Lawwell] and Dermot [Desmond]. If it is the right player that we all feel is worth that money, and can really take us forward, then I’m sure Brendan would be supported in that. We could just bring players in almost for the sake of it.”
Chris Sutton and John Hartson are the current record holders of transfer arrivals for the highest amount – £6m. However, the club has not gone to similar lengths in order to scoop out top-pedigree talents in the last decade. Olivier Ntcham’s £4.5m fee was the highest they have spent in a while and the owners of the Glasgow based club will be more than happy to indulge in order to further strengthen the squad.
Brendan Rodgers has accumulated a young squad over the past 2 years and has delivered 2 Scottish Premiership titles, 2 Scottish League Cups and 1 Scottish Cup. He already has signed Charly Musonda and an 18-month loan deal from Chelsea and have bolstered the squad by adding Marvin Compper, Jack Hendry and Lewis Morgan over the January window.
Since their expansion plans are still being drawn up for the following season, here are a few players they can break the bank for.
Samir Nasri
A decorated European winner who once dazzled the stadiums in England is currently without a contract. Even though he is a free agent, Nasri’s illustrious history will come with a massive wage bill and signing-on-bonus.
Robert Mak
The 26-year-old is an attacking midfielder by trade who currently is serving a loan spell with Greek outfit, PAOK FC. He has been impressive this season with 5 goals and 3 assists after enduring a mediocre period with his parent club, Zenit St Petersburg.
Mak is valued highly in the Slovak national team with 41 total caps and 9 goals. He was signed by Zenit last season for €3.5m, a fee that can rise significantly if interests start to heat up from other European sides.
Lazar Markovic
The Liverpool winger has struggled to keep up with the pace of the Premier League and has been loaned out to Belgium outfit, RSC Anderlecht. He has worked with Rodgers before and Liverpool might not mind parting ways with the 23-year-old come June.
