Arsenal are among the interested parties who would like to provide Marcus Rashford with an escape from the grips of Jose Mourinho. The 20-year-old forward has fallen down the pecking order now that Alexis Sanchez has arrived on a massive four-and-a-half-year contract. Rashford did not even make the squad in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle United last weekend and have not started a league game since the start of 2018.
Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry has passed down some advice to Rashford’s ears about quitting Manchester United and look for a club who can guarantee first-team football. However, will it be at Arsenal? We all know about the rival mentality that exists between Arsene Wenger and Mourinho. The United boss has gone to remarkable lengths to get the better of Wenger on multiple occasions.
His competitive attitude came into the limelight when he splashed all his resources at hand to pry away Sanchez from Arsenal. The Portuguese tactician was expected to address his defensive issues and sign a left-back in the January window.
In a similar fashion, it is highly unlikely that Mourinho would sanction Rashford’s move to Arsenal while he is in charge. The England international was rotated around with Anthony Martial in the right wing for the first half of the season – the position which has currently been taken over by Sanchez.
Rashford’s second prefered position – the striker, is also occupied by the £90m summer arrival, Romelu Lukaku.
Generally, the current situation is far from ideal for a talented youngster who needs regular minutes to further his development. The promise with which he took on the pitch at Old Trafford back in February of 2016 to slot in 2 goals against Arsenal has been curbed in recent times.
His 109 appearances for the club has seen bouts of absolute brilliance over the past couple of seasons and has earmarked him to be one of the greats in world football.
But one cannot accomplish that by either warming the benches or by taking a couple of touches in garbage time. Kylian Mbappe has already taken the European stage by storm and is matching strides, if not better, with that of a 19-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ousmane Dembele has been unfortunate enough to pick up recurring injuries but is still a top-choice whenever fit.
Rashford’s potential is boundless and it needs to be converted into one of a superstar. While Arsenal might have low odds of signing the England international, the player should take into account every offer that comes his way and take the path towards a better future.
