Jose Mourinho has revamped every single position in the Manchester United line up except for his goalkeeper since his arrival. The Portuguese manager has spent a healthy amount on transfers to bring in the likes of Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku. On paper, the Red Devils boast of an extremely talented attack but their defence is still below par and has been bailed out on multiple occasions by the brilliance of David De Gea.
It is believed that Jose Mourinho wants to now reorganize his backline and is ready to part ways with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. Jones was signed from Blackburn Rovers by Sir Alex Ferguson as a young defender with great potential. Known for his no-nonsense style of defending, Jones applies the basics of defending very well. The Englishman’s career has, however, been hampered by multiple injuries and he is yet to live up to his potential. With Mourinho ready to cut him loose, here are three clubs who can sign the defender.
Arsenal
The Gunners were in the market for a defender last month. They failed to land their top targets and a deadline day bid for Jonny Evans was way lower than what West Brom expected. Arsenal currently have a host of centre-backs but no one has been able to stabilize the backline. Per Mertesacker is not getting any younger while Laurent Koscielny looks well past his prime.
Rob Holding is still too young to command a regular starting position and Shkodran Mustafi has been extremely inconsistent. Hence Wenger might be interested in bringing in a defender who not only knows the league well but has potential to be a great defender.
Leicester City
The Foxes have been revamped under Claude Puel and are playing some excellent high-tempo football once again. Their defence has been stabilized with the pairing of Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire. Maguire has been particularly brilliant and has been linked with a move away from the club. If Maguire were to leave, Phil Jones would be a good replacement for him at the club. Jones would get regular game time and that might unlock the next level of his potential.
Everton
The big-spending Toffees are still struggling in the league and despite bringing in Mangala their defence has not been stabilized yet. Michael Keane is horribly off form and Phil Jagielka is near the dusk of his career. This would mean that having a player like Jones will improve the quality of their defence and help them improve the squad.
