It has now come to our understanding that German international, Timo Werner has rejected a contract extension with his current club RB Leipzig. This might be a massive red flag for the Bundesliga outfit but a huge boost for interested parties. To be specific, Premier League clubs – Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are currently monitoring the 21-year-old’s situation in Germany and would like nothing better than to sign the centre-forward.
Werner has been prolific for the Bulls ever since his arrival to Red Bull Arena in the summer of 2016. He has already racked up 37 goals in 61 total appearances for the club, 16 of those goals have come this season.
According to Transfermarkt, his current contract is set to run until the summer of 2020 but Leipzig wants to reward him with higher wages and extend his obligations to the club further. Werner is one of the hottest talents in European football right now and has been pegged to be the next generational talent to follow in the footsteps of Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller.
He will be travelling to Russia to represent his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. We have seen a significant number of players gain recognition after performing on the world stage – Alexis Sanchez of Chile and James Rodriguez of Colombia to name a few.
Werner is already a versatile presence who can appear on almost any position on the final third, be it from either of the flanks or as a lone striker. His keen eye for goal at such a young age along with a turn of pace which is next to none makes him one of the most lethal threats in the Bundesliga.
Bringing him in is expected to cost a significant amount but the Premier League elites would not mind spending on an already established star. Here are a few teams who can capitalize on the situation.
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of young talent and he would be overjoyed to bring his compatriot to Anfield. The front line already has Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in red-hot form alongside a troubled Sadio Mane. While Mane is still in Klopp’s plans for the future, Werner might just be the ideal piece of the attacking jigsaw.
The Reds have lost Philippe Coutinho in the last transfer window and are yet to find a replacement. While Werner is not a creative spark like Coutinho, he will bring a different dynamic to the Liverpool attack and can be the face of the club in the near future.
Chelsea
If Eden Hazard leaves for Real Madrid who will come in? That has been the question in the minds of Chelsea fans ever since speculation started over the Belgian’s future. The La Liga giants will splash in an astronomical fee for the 27-year-old’s services which will give Chelsea the financial leverage to plan a swoop for Werner.
Manchester City
Kun Aguero is still the leading man up front with his understudy, Gabriel Jesus spending a stint on the sidelines with injury. The Argentine has been linked to his former side, Atletico Madrid. If such a scenario takes place, ever, Pep Guardiola will be in the market for a striker and Werner can be the prime candidate.
