West Ham United could move in for Watford striker Troy Deeney if their attempts to sign Liverpool outcast Daniel Sturridge falls through this month. According to recent reports in the English media, the Hammers are considering making a move for the 29-year-old striker if they fail to land English forward, Sturridge from Merseyside before the transfer window comes to a close at the end of this month.
The east London outfit are looking to recruit a frontman in January with the trio of their attacking options, Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic and Diafra Sakho all spending their time on the sidelines after falling victim to injuries recently. However, David Moyes’s side could face stiff competition from Premier League rivals, Stoke City and Brighton & Hove Albion in pursuit of Deeney’s signature. The Hammers wants to take Sturridge on a loan deal with a view of a permanent move in the summer for a fee in the region of £25m. If a deal for the 28-year-old forward falls through, then they could turn their attention on bringing Deeney to east London.
The Watford centre-forward has made 320 appearances for the Hornets during his career, scoring 109 goals while making 52 assists. He has a wealth of experience in the Premier League which West Ham might look to utilise in their fight to save themselves from a potential relegation at the end of the season.
The Hammers find themselves in 11th place in the Premier League table with a tally of 26 points in 24 league matches. They have been in terrific form in the league of late and have performed brilliantly under David Moyes since he took charge of the club two months ago.
However, the Londoners sit just 4 points above the relegation zone with some of their key players out of commission due to injuries. Andy Carroll needs to undergo a foot surgery while the attacking duo of Manuel Lanzini and Marko Arnautovic have fallen victim to hamstring injuries.
There are also serious doubts over the futures of Javier Hernandez, Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew with all of them being linked with a move away from east London. Hence, the addition of an experienced striker like Deeney could definitely give them a major boost going into the second half of their campaign as his talents might aid them in their quest to avoid the agony of relegation to the Championship this term. Deeney has scored 3 goals and made 3 assists in 17 matches for the Hornets in this campaign. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Watford target man and whether he can reignite his career at West Ham.
