Sky Sports has reported that West Brom have contacted Watford to inquire about a move for their forward Troy Deeney. Deeney is the club captain at the Hornets but has been unable to cement his place in the first team this season. He has played only 15 of the 24 matches clocking just over 750 minutes of Premier League action this season. His return has been poor with the 29-year-old scoring 3 goals in 17 matches this season.
Reports now would suggest that West Brom have approached Watford to sign the Englishman. The Baggies are reportedly preparing a £16 million offer for the hitman. Deeney joined Watford back in 2010 for a fee of £500,000 from Walsall and has scored 102 goals in 234 games for the club, making him one of the rather popular figures at Vicarage Road.
As for West Brom, they are ready to pay the above-mentioned sum but are unwilling to go a penny above that. The club was initially preparing to fund the move by using the money from the sale of Jonny Evans but even after four weeks of rumours linking Evans with a move to Manchester City or Arsenal, nothing has surfaced. Moreover, City are believed to be closing in on Aymeric Laporte and that would leave Arsenal as the only negotiators. Last week, Alan Pardew had mentioned that the existing bids which had come in were not enough and so a move to Arsenal would seem tough now.
In light of these events, West Brom’s financial officers have had to find a new way out to fund a move for Deeney. It would seem that the Baggies have indeed found a way to avoid the restrictions of the Financial Fair Play and still farm out enough money to launch a bid for Deeney.
West Brom have been suffering all season and are in the 19th position on the table, level on points with bottom-placed Swansea City but ahead on superior goal difference. The Baggies are 3 points away from safety and have to seriously buckle down for the second part of the season if they want to enjoy the riches of the Premier League next season.
Moreover, their star forward Salomon Rondon has been linked with a move to the bigger clubs of the Premier League. This would mean that the Baggies, who have just scored 19 goals all season, could be further crippled in the attack. Hence, it would make the move for Deeney all the more important as goals are clearly the need of the day for West Brom.
